Just a few months ago, I would have said it was impossible.

But if you’re reading this page, then you already know that it’s not.

Why Can’t We Fuel Right AND Eat Healthy at the Same Time?

 

In the 10 years since I started No Meat Athlete, I’ve had a LOT of conversations with plant-based athletes about how to best fuel our workouts without feeling like we’re eating junk food.

There’s just never been a good solution.

The sugary, artificial gels that most runners use — supposedly the “ideal” endurance fuel — tend to upset people’s stomachs... and even if you can handle them after 15 or 20 miles, they’re the last thing you feel like eating after you’ve had a couple.

(And even if you could avoid these issues, would you really want to be putting that stuff in your body multiple times a week?)

Instead, most of us opt for whole foods. Bananas, dates, and other fruits — the food nature designed to give us quick energy.

But as your workouts get longer — something nature might NOT have intended — you start to understand why all those high-tech products exist.

Carrying bulky whole foods isn’t much fun, so you start eating less (bad idea). And come race day, because you can’t count on the aid stations to have this food (or any vegan options), you’re dependent on a crew deliver what you need.

And, honestly, whole foods just aren’t ideal for endurance...

Dates work great for short-ish runs, but try them on a 20-miler and let me know how that goes.

On second thought, don’t. :) The fiber build-up and sugar content become a big problem, and after about 25 miles, I promise you’ll never want to look at another one (I’ve tried it).

It was out of these frustrations (and race-day disasters) that this project was born. We wanted to create a plant-based, portable way to take in calories and electrolytes while you're training — and do it with 100% whole foods.

And I'm so proud to be able to say that, with the help of Izzy Fischer, a triathlon world championship qualifier, nutrition expert, and the newest member of the NMA team, we've done "the impossible."

Feedback from the No Meat Athlete Taste Testers:

Fuel was always an afterthought in my training. I was more of a ‘get through the run, scarf something down once I get home’ kind of guy.

Who makes these?

No Meat Athlete founded Plant Bites to create the WFPB energy solution that we all needed!

Our team, who has received food safety training and certification, operates in a commercial kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, adhering to the highest standards and regulations.

But as we often say at our sister brand, Complement, the most stringent test is asking ourselves, "Is this great enough for our family?" For them, there is no amount of expense or effort that is too much. Over the past few weeks, as we've made test batches, we've been happy to share these delicious bites with our kids they love them! and we're sure you will too.

When can I expect my order?

We have the very first batch ready to ship now. There is only enough for 350 of our NMA collaborators, so be quick to grab yours!

Are they available for international ordering?

Right now, Plant Bites are only available to US customers. Sorry! We will let you know as soon as we can expand our deliveries to other countries. (These Bites are made with fresh fruit, so we have to be careful that they don't get delayed in customs and spoil.)

What is the shelf life of Plant Bites?

Three weeks when kept in the fridge. Be sure to follow the Use By date that is printed on the package. You can also freeze the Bites, like you would a package of berries.

How do I use them?

First of all, Bites are made from fresh fruit, so store them in the fridge. One serving is three bites, and is a good dose of energy for about an hour of training.

We particularly love Bites straight out of the freezer, especially on a hot day. Try it out!

Do they contain any allergens?

Plant Bites are free from dairy, eggs, and all other animal-based ingredients, as well as nuts, gluten, artificial colors, fillers, or sweeteners, MSG, GMOs, and soy. Please note, however, that the Bites are produced in a shared commercial kitchen that may process these ingredients from time to time.

Also note that Bites do contain citric acid, which in rare cases causes issues for people allergic to citrus fruit, and cassava root, which can (again, in rare cases) lead to cross-reactivity in people sensitive to latex.
